In the Fall of 1976 Richard Jordan, Phil Segal, Gordie Feathers, Richard Jarrell set out on a mission. That mission was to bring ice hockey to NC State. Over forty years later, none of the original founders could have envisioned what their Wolfpuck would turn into; the premier college hockey program in the Carolinas.
A celebration of that first team will be held on November 15th at 9:30 PM as the modern Icepack take on ACC rival and original “Big Four Member,” Wake Forest. As part of the celebration the Icepack will debut their eagerly anticipated red third jersey. According to Captain Ryan Kinney ’20 this night is special for a number of reasons; “in my time at NC State I have seen this program take off and to be able to share our recent success with the team that started it all, means a lot.” As for the third jersey, Alternate Captain Eric Todd ’21 added, “it was awesome to be able to design this jersey and honoring the original team in the crest brought the whole design together.”
The Icepack will be welcoming members of the original team back for a ceremonial faceoff and a chance for players from then and now to be able to meet. We will honor the late Phil Segal, better known has Havana Phil, who passed away last summer. Phil was a pioneer of youth hockey in Greensboro and instrumental in the start of Wolfpuck Hockey.
Co-founder Richard Jordan, who will be traveling from Minnesota for the event noted how far the team has come from playing exhibitions against soldiers from Fort Bragg to now; “Looking back every minute was a blast. Never in my wildest dreams would I have envisioned what a successful program it was to become in the years ahead. I am a bit overwhelmed and thankful for the opportunity to be part of the celebration with today’s coaches and players.”
