Selwaeh's 5: Weekly Blog #1

Zak Selwaeh is currently the Play by Play Broadcaster for the NC State IcePack on PackTV. New to this season, he will be uploading weekly updates surrounding the ACCHL, IcePack, and PackTV's broadcast information.

  1. Roster Upgrades

  • This is a big one. The roster this year has taken a noticeable hit from the ACC Champion dream team, with Sam Banasiewicz, Joey Hall, and ACC Tourney MVP Eric Mura all departing. But with the great returning core and a whole slew of new IcePack players, this year is going to be one of the good ones. Be on the lookout for Matt Miller, who will be seeing the ice for the first time this weekend in the red and black sweaters. A prolific goal scorer and offensive catalyst, expect to see him be an immediate boost to the Top 6.

  1. Carolina East Division on Fire

  • In years past, it hasn’t been a secret that the Carolina East division has been under the control of the IcePack. This year already, UNC finds themselves at the top of the division after back to back wins this past weekend, with one being a conference match against Richmond. The spiders barely edged the Wilmington IceHawks, and find themselves at a 1-1 record. State doesn’t face UNC until the To-Be-Announced Backyard Brawl, and plays Richmond in their second home game of the year. NC State takes on Duke in their first game this weekend, which will give coaches and fans a great opportunity to see their newest players take on a familiar division foe.

  1. Kinney’s first game as Captain

  • Sam Banasiewicz undoubtedly left a sizeable hole in not just the IcePack, but the entire ACC upon his departure. This’ll make it even harder for Ryan Kinney to put the coveted “C” on his shoulder, but he seems to be ready for it, he told PackTV. “Leadership comes from everybody… and if I’m doing my job, everybody is going to be stepping up equally.”

“I’m just going to work hard and be an example for everybody.”

  1. Who takes the crease?

  • After attending tryouts and a few practices, it’s difficult to say who Coach Gazzillo will be putting in the crease for these upcoming weekends. Josh Cannon has shown no dip in compete upon his breakout year last year, while both Ian Hutchison and Jess Tart have made a very strong case to lace up to tend the cage. My guess is the team will lean towards Cannon for the first several games to reward him for his performance in the ACC Tournament and Regionals, but don’t be surprised if Assistant Coach Alex Rosetto starts rotating them. This team has three #1 goaltenders, with a fourth rookie to be put into the mix in the spring. There’s some difficult decisions to be made.

  1. Broadcast info

  • I will be away from the first two games due to other obligations, so Logan Ward will take the reigns on the call. Best of luck to him, and be sure to tune in 15 minutes prior to puck drop for PackTV’s pregame report. Puck drop will be at 3:45 on Saturday from the Orange County Sportsplex, as the IcePack take on the Blue Devils.
