NC State defeats West Virginia twice in the Opening Weekend
A long offseason and a virtually brand new team was not enough to stop the IcePack demolishing the Mountaineers this past weekend, defeating them 8-2 in the first match, then lacing up less than 24 hours later to do it all over again, by a score of 8-1.
Wasting no time in showing that they belonged here, new members of Coach Gazzillo’s crew took charge over the weekend. Riley Johnson potted 6 in the twine over the span of the weekend, with Parker Szarek adding 3. Adding some help on the weekend as well were newcomers Laythe Jadallah (1-2-3) and Alex Robinson (1-1-2).
Several members of last years IcePack left their footprint on the Morgantown Arena Ice, as Sam Banasiewicz registered a goal and added a couple helpers, and Eric Todd and Trevor Merchant recorded a score and an assist each.
“It feels like we have four 1st Lines going”, said 2nd year Trevor Merchant. “Everyone’s clicking so well… we’re going to be dangerous this year for sure.”
Leading the way on defense, Ellis Rushford manned the blue line but showed he wasn’t afraid to pitch in, finishing off tied for 2nd in points for the weekend (1-3-4). Joey Hall registered the win in the first night, and Jess Tart entered the starters crease for the first time in a while in game 2, getting the dub.
State will carry a 2-0-0-0 (2-0 ACC) record through to the opening of the Stephen Russell Memorial Tournament, with the IcePack first lacing up against George Washington at 8:30PM at the PNC Arena. As well, a game has been added to the schedule on October 22nd, seeing the Tar Heels take on the Pack in the first Backyard Brawl of this season at the PNC Arena.
The remainder of the games this year will be covered by the PackTV broadcast crew. For any updates regarding schedule and lineups, stay tuned to @NCStateHockey and @intothepack on twitter.
