Sam Banasiewicz nominated for ACHA Regional First Team All Star

The ACHA All Star Game now adds a little bit of flair to their lineup, as the Icepack’s very own Sam Banasiewicz has been nominated to his first all star game at the ACHA regional level.

The 5’11 senior from Raleigh, NC, showed nothing less than All Star Material this season, potting 25 goals and adding 18 assists for a 43 point season. He also scored his 100th career goal this season against the UNC-Chapel Hill Tar Heels in the second of the two Backyard Brawls. It’s hard to not only look at his personal point totals though, because in his first season as a captain along now Icepack alumnus Luis Giminez, he led the team to a 14-6 regular season record, the best the team has seen since the 2015-16 season.

“We had a lot of new guys going into this year, and we didn’t quite know what to expect,” said Banasiewicz. “But I always expect a championship every year… and if we set ourselves short, we’re already selling ourselves short. We got a little disappointed at the tournament this year, but at the same time we look back at the success with almost a brand new team, to do what we did… this has been one of the closest teams chemistry wise that I’ve been a part of."

Legends aren’t made very often, but it’s safe to say that Banasiewicz has amounted to more than what many people expected at this level of play. Consistently an All Star at the ACCHL level with his counterpart in the dominant duo with Giminez, Captain Clutch will captain the ACC team come April 2019.

“I’ve had the privilege of playing for NC State for the past 4 years” said Banasiewicz. “Getting to play the sport I love for the school I’ve always been a fan of… there’s a certain passion with it. And representing the ACC in that way makes it a whole lot more fun.”

Now approaching his final season of play, there’s a bit of an added pressure in the air. With half of the team departing next season for graduation, there’s about to be a whole slew of new Icepack players, and this nomination will change nothing about how he leads.

“It won’t [change my play]. It’s nice to have the personal recognition, but no one really looks at it unless you make championships” said Banasiewicz.

“Going into next year, we still have the same mentality of winning as our top priority.”
