Gameday: Regular Season Finale
State takes on Mountaineers for the second time to close off Regular Season action.
How to watch/tune in: PackTV YouTube livestream starting at 8PM, with Ethan Barry and Zak Selwaeh having the call.
How to attend: Raleigh Iceplex, 8:15PM puck drop. $5 general admission, $3 student admission (with valid ID).
After the Mountaineers (9-11-1) were clobbered last night, the team hopes to fight back strong and spoil the Icepack (13-6, 7-2 ACC) season finale at the Raleigh Iceplex. Besides the second period last night, it was a slow burning game, as both teams were still feeling each other out. Coach Gazzillo and crew hope to get back to work tonight and try to limit team captain Brian Dickman from capitalizing once again.
The Scoop on West Virginia:
The Mountaineers played solid for most of the game last night. The Icepack did have more puck possesion, but no one could say for sure that West Virginia played “bad.” Nonetheless, Matt Meyer came in for the team in yellow and played solid, only giving up one goal in relief of Hunter Ivey. Team Captain Brian Dickman scored one of the two lone goals, and contributed to the breakout. Although even strength play was good, the Mountaineers failed to capitalize on two 5-3 power play opportunities, something that is never good to occur in a game against a team like the Icepack. Expect West Virginia to improve their special teams and come back with more knowledge on how to park the Pack.
The Scoop on State:
The Icepack knew coming in that the contest wouldn’t be easy, and for the most part, it wasn’t. Until a flurry of goals in the second period boosted the team and masked a flat first period. Goals were scored by Jack McDonald, Sam Banasiewicz, and even Ellis Rushford. The team knows well, that if you can get those guys to produce, along with Ian O’Rourke and Ryan Kinney, teams should be fearful. Without Luis Giminez, the pack need to continue to improve upon their special teams, their forecheck, and their offensive zone play.
Not much change from last night, as always, lineup changes are a gametime decision:
Sam Banasiewicz (C) Jack McDonald Eric Todd
Ryan Kinney Tyler Alfonzetti Trevor Merchant
Ryan Lenzmeier Matt Costigan Hayden Dewey
Eric Webb Eric Johnston Ethan Schwartz
Ellis Rushford Ian O'Rourke
Cam Mazikowski Jon Kokkelenberg
Chris Wing Eric Mura
Keep an eye on:
West Virginia: Matt Meyer. If Matt gets the start in net tonight, the Icepack shouldn’t take him lightly. He dominated after the goaltender came in relief for the Mountaineer starter. Expect the Icepack to throw everything they have at the net to try and finish off the weekend strong.
State: Jack McDonald. Jack played his first game of the season last night, and most people wouldn’t have even guessed it was his first game. Jack fit smoothly into the system and registered his first of the season, and anchored the first line well in between Sam Banasiewicz and Eric Todd. Expect Jack to be on fire once again and help the Icepack send the fans home happy.
Notes: Sam Banasiewicz continues his goal/point streak… The Icepack are still awaiting the fate of Wake Forest v. JMU to find out their opponent in the tournament…
