The inaugural Governor's Cup made for another great matchup between the Wolfpack and the Tar Heels. Just over 3,000 were in attendance last Monday as the rivals squared off for the second time at PNC Arena. Governor Roy Cooper was in attendance for the game and was welcomed by captains Sam Banasiewicz and Ben Sizemore (UNC) for the ceremonial puck drop.
The game proved to be another amazing atmosphere for hockey fans in the triangle of all ages. Hayden Dewy started the scoring for NC State as he slid one 5-hole about 4 minutes into the game. It would prove to be a back and forth battle as UNC would take a 2-1 lead before captain Luis Gimenez tied the game in the second period. Eric Webb was able to tally two more for the icepack as they took a 4-2 lead heading into the third period. Ryan Lenzmeier scored on a breakaway to make it 5-2 in what seemingly would be the knockout blow. Joey Hall shut the door NC State as the Pack won 5-3.
Backyard Brawl 3 looks to be another exciting game between the biggest rivalry in the state. The game is currently scheduled for January 26th. More details will be available soon.
